Ayahuasca retreats have made Iquitos one of the reference points of esoteric and spiritual tourism. The commercialization of this drink, traditional in many Amazonian communities, has generated a series of problems such as the depletion of the liana or the perversion of the rites associated with the taking of ayahuasca. Such is the risk that these practices have recently been declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation in an attempt to protect them from tourism.
